Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I see a year abundant with personal growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyable experiences! But what insights have I gained this year, and what’s my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking elements of starting university, and if you’re a prospective student perusing this, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I can say with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with brief conversations with individuals in comparable circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not prepared or comfortable, that’s perfectly fine! There will be a plethora of ice-breaking opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that being true to yourself is essential. With such a diverse group of people across the course and the university, you’re sure to encounter those who align with you.

An additional challenge was the academic workload and complexity of the content. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and, in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies assisted me in navigating this feeling, one being the acknowledgment that everyone shares the same experience. If you do not comprehend something, I can almost assure you that others are experiencing the same challenge. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This could be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!

This transitions to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are phenomenal. They genuinely wish for you to thrive and recognize the difficulties students encounter. They relate to students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year wellbeing representative. This position enabled me to engage with the faculty, which is exceptionally beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have an excess of support!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the numerous support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to find enjoyment despite pressures like examinations and deadlines.
