Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was far removed from what my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day settling into my housing, just a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire time in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet anyone. Now, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. What did I realize? It’s wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events designed to help you connect with others. Also, if you can embody one trait, let it be authenticity. With such a diverse array of individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and even more so from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can shake your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel unworthy. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If something is unclear, I can almost promise you that others are struggling too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson of the first year. Request help from your peers and faculty!

This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and maintain regular communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had started earlier. I mentioned taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson is to fully utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

All in all, this year has shown me that the anxious feelings leading up to and throughout university are often unfounded and can be diminished by the support provided by faculty and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone and how to make the most of my time, even amid pressures such as exams and deadlines.
