Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Dipping into such a vast sea of experiences was not something my previously introverted and quiet self was used to. Upon reflection, I recognize a year brimming with personal growth, challenges, and enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most daunting challenges was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating parts of starting university, and if you are perusing this as a prospective student, it could be one of your primary concerns. On the first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before the semester commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room due to feeling too daunted to step out and greet others. However, today, I can assert with confidence that I have formed some of the best friendships here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was initiating small conversations with individuals in similar scenarios. So, what have I learned? I found that it’s beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel adequately prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be an abundance of ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. The variety of individuals across the course and university means there’s a high likelihood you will encounter those who share your interests.

An additional challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even steeper transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can sometimes undermine your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you’re struggling with something, I can nearly assure you that there are several others who are equally puzzled. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to internalize during your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy toward students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the academic year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned earlier taking leap— I did take one at the year’s inception by becoming a well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to utilize the support available to you. You can never have too much help!

Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and throughout university, are generally unfounded and can be alleviated by the vast array of support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has informed me that I am never alone, and it has equipped me with the skills to enjoy myself alongside pressures such as exams and deadlines.
