Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something I was used to, given my previously timid and withdrawn nature. Now, looking back, I recognize a year abundant in personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was making acquaintances. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting factors of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it may be one of your primary worries. On the initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Conversely, today, I can assertively say I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with some casual conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what have I discovered? I learned that making a leap of faith at the start of the year is always preferable. If you don’t feel completely prepared or at ease, there’s no need to fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one quality, be authentic. With such a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter people who resonate with you.
Another difficulty was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the topics. There was certainly a noticeable escalation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even steeper transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel less capable. A few factors helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you there are others who are equally bewildered. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to absorb in the first year. Request support from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They show compassion towards students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year about our concerns. I did not truly make use of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I’d taken advantage of it earlier. I spoke of taking leaps before – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can undertake for yourself! My main lesson from this aspect of university is to utilize the assistance provided to you. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has enlightened me to the fact that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unjustified and can be eased through the various support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone, and it has illustrated how to find joy even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
