Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unknown was not something my formerly timid self had ever been accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and where do I find myself now?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This is often one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be among your greatest apprehensions. On my first moving day into my residence, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, sitting here today, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all of which began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel quite ready or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events to help you engage with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one trait, it should be authenticity. With the diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you’re certain to find people who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly an escalation from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger leap between the first and second terms. Being thrust into such a setting can challenge your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors assisted me in navigating that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can nearly guarantee you that others are too. So, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely wish for you to thrive and realize that students face difficulties. They show understanding towards students and maintain ongoing dialogue with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. As I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the year’s beginning by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which proves to be immensely valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and it certainly stands out as one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to seize the opportunities for assistance that are provided. You can never have too much support!
All in all, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the multitude of support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
