Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what have I gained from this year, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more overwhelming aspects of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be among your foremost worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room because I was too apprehensive to step out and introduce myself to others. Sitting here today, I can assertively say that I’ve developed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I’ve learned that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also grasped that if you can embody one thing, be genuine. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
An additional challenge was the level of workload and difficulty in content. There was certainly an increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always beneficial for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you don’t comprehend something, I can nearly assure you that there are others who also don’t grasp it. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for guidance from both your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and acknowledge the challenges students face. They sympathize with students and keep an open line of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I referred to taking risks—I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway regarding this aspect of university is to utilize the support provided to you. You can never have an excess!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated with the support systems available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and illustrated how to find joy amidst stresses like exams and deadlines.
