Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the deep end was not something my formerly timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what has this year revealed to me, and what is my current position?
One of the earliest and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting parts of embarking on university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it likely ranks high on your list of concerns. On my initial day moving into my dorm, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too intimidated to venture out and meet others. However, sitting here today, I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever encountered at this university and in this program. I’ve built a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with a bit of casual conversation with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I grasp? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for icebreakers and activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one quality, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you’re bound to connect with individuals who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the volume of work and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can occasionally shake your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is navigating the same journey. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others share your confusion. Therefore, seek assistance. This could be the single most crucial lesson to embrace in the first year. Ask your classmates and the faculty for help!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students face. They relate to us and ensure constant communication throughout the year regarding our difficulties. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. I spoke about taking leaps previously – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. Numerous ways exist to engage with staff, and it’s certainly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this facet of university is to seize the help presented to you. You can never have an excess of assistance!
In general terms, this year has imparted to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often irrational and can be relieved through the plethora of support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never solitary, and it has illuminated ways to find enjoyment amid stressors like examinations and deadlines.
