Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh first-year student. Engaging with the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved and timid self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was creating friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my dormitory, just days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. However, today I can assert with confidence that I have established some of the finest friendships during my time at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all originated from casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? It’s beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting with others. Also, be genuine. With such a wide array of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who share your interests.
Another obstacle I faced was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was a significant transition from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. What aided me was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can almost assure you that others are struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to learn in the freshman year. Reach out for support from both classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges that students encounter. They show empathy and maintain ongoing communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a representative for well-being in my year. This position enabled me to foster connections with faculty members, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My essential takeaway is to take full advantage of the support available. You can never have too much help!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased through the numerous support choices provided by staff and fellow students. It has revealed that I’m never truly alone and has taught me how to enjoy my time, even in the face of stressors like exams and deadlines.
