Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and unsure about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Entering this new realm was not something my formerly shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I realize it has been a year full of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This definitely stands out as one of the more daunting parts of beginning university, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it may be one of your foremost worries. On my moving-in day, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too hesitant to step out and introduce myself. However, today, I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual chats with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling slightly unprepared or uncomfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events and opportunities to help you engage with others. I also realized that if you can embrace one principle, it should be to be your authentic self. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and campus, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was undeniably a shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such a challenging environment can be tough on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. Several factors assisted me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reassurance that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can nearly guarantee that others are also struggling. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to take away from your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I spoke earlier about taking risks – I did take one at the year’s onset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best things you can do for your personal growth! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to seize the opportunities for support that are available to you. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated by the various support resources offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has guided me on how to enjoy myself even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
