Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with nerves, fear, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Diving headfirst into such an experience was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was equipped for. Reflecting on it now, I recognize an academic year rich with personal growth, challenges, and immense enjoyment! But what has this year imparted to me, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was forging friendships. This certainly ranks as one of the more intimidating facets of commencing university life, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it might be one of your greatest concerns. On the day I moved into my residence, just a few days prior to the semester commencing, I spent the entire day secluded in my room because I was too apprehensive to step out and greet others. However, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in small conversations with individuals facing similar situations. So, what did I gain from this experience? I learned that it’s imperative to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel fully prepared or at ease, fret not! Numerous ice-breaking occurrences and events will provide opportunities for connection. I also discovered that if you can embody one trait, be yourself. With the diverse range of individuals in the program and university; you’re bound to discover others like you.

Another obstacle I had to overcome was the volume of work and the difficulty of the content. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in many ways, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment isn’t always conducive to your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that sentiment, one being the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, I can almost assure you that there are at least several others who also don’t grasp it. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial skill to develop in your first year. Seek help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely desire for you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They relate to student experiences and maintain ongoing communication with us about our challenges throughout the year. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the year’s start by becoming a wellbeing representative for my year. Having this role allowed me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to bond with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to make the most of the support being provided to you. You can never have an excess of assistance!

In a broader sense, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both leading up to and during university, are almost invariably unfounded and can be alleviated with the multitude of support options accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
