Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and immense joy! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current state?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be your biggest concern. On my first day settling into my residence, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to step outside and greet others. Nevertheless, as I sit here today, I can assertively state that I have formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in light conversation with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a leap at the start of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breaking and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody one trait, be authentic. There’s a diverse array of individuals across the program and university; you are sure to find like-minded peers.

Another challenge I needed to navigate was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even larger gap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be taxing on your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly assure you that there are others who also find it perplexing. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They show empathy toward students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really make use of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take a step at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance being provided. You can never have too much support!

On a broader scale, this year has shown me that feelings of apprehension, both leading up to and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be eased with the multitude of support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never isolated, and it has guided me on how to enjoy myself amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
