Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved persona was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year abundant in personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
One of the foremost and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening elements of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it might rank among your utmost concerns. On my first day of moving into my housing, a few days prior to the semester kicking off, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, as I sit here today, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all kicked off with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s best to take a plunge at the beginning of the year. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be ample ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also realized that if you can embody one quality, let it be authenticity. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
An additional challenge was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly an elevation from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can be demanding on your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel unqualified. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something doesn’t click, I can almost assure you that others are in the same predicament. Therefore, don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to absorb in the first year. Seek guidance from both your colleagues and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend that students encounter difficulties. They connect with students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly leverage the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I spoke of taking leaps – I leaped at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position afforded me the chance to familiarize myself with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are countless avenues to engage with staff, and it’s undeniably one of the best decisions you can make for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to capitalize on the support available. You can never receive too much!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated through the extensive support options offered by staff and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never solitary and how to have fun in the midst of stressors such as exams and deadlines.
