Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the unknown wasn’t something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Reflecting back, I recognize a year brimming with personal growth, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most daunting challenges was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more intimidating components of commencing university, and if you’re a future student reading this, it could be one of your greatest concerns. On my move-in day, a few days prior to the start of the semester, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, overwhelmed by the thought of venturing out and greeting others. However, sitting here now, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the most incredible friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve cultivated a second family at Imperial, all thanks to striking up casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I gleaned? I realized it’s crucial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events designed to facilitate interactions with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing to embrace, it’s authenticity. With such a diverse array of individuals in the program and university, you’re sure to find your tribe.

Another challenge was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-level studies, and in several ways, an even larger transition between the first and second terms. Being immersed in such a setting can sometimes be tough on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel like you’re falling short. Several factors helped me navigate that mindset, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something confuses you, I can almost assure that several others are grappling with it too. So, seek help. This may be the single most crucial lesson to learn in your freshman year. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They sympathize with students and ensure consistent communication with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t really make full use of the supportive resources until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of them earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the onset of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to build relationships with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance you’re provided. You can never have too much!

On a broader scale, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be alleviated with the extensive support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has revealed to me how to find enjoyment alongside stressors such as exams and deadlines.
