Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often one of the most nerve-wracking aspects of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry. On my first day of moving into my dormitory, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the entire day locked in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and socialize. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve cultivated some of the most wonderful friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I realized? It’s beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel ready or at ease, don’t panic! There are numerous ice-breaking activities designed to facilitate connections with fellow students. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse mix of individuals throughout the program and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your vibe.
Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a significant leap from A-level studies, and an even more drastic change from the first to the second term. Being in such an atmosphere can take a toll on your self-esteem; you may feel inadequate in comparison to your peers. What assisted me was the realization that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re struggling to grasp something, chances are, others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might just be the crucial lesson of the first year. Reach out to fellow students and faculty for support!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year. I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had explored it sooner. I spoke of taking leaps earlier – I took a significant one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with staff members, which is invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the finest things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway is to seize the available help. You can never have too much of it!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety regarding university are frequently misplaced and can be eased with the support offered by faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I am never isolated and has shown me how to enjoy myself regardless of stressors like exams and deadlines.
