Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This certainly ranks among the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you are reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your foremost worries. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just days before the semester kicked off, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Sitting here today, I can assertively say I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with engaging in small conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I discovered? It’s always best to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be a multitude of ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate your connection with others. I also realized that if you can embody one trait, be yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals across the program and university, you’re bound to encounter kindred spirits.

Another obstacle was the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment isn’t always conducive to your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same situation. If something eludes your understanding, I can almost assure you there are others who are equally perplexed. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to achieve and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain an ongoing dialogue with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking chances before – I did seize one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly valuable. There are ample methods to become acquainted with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to leverage the assistance that is available to you. You can never have too much!

In a broader sense, this year has imparted to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased with the plethora of support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to revel in my experiences amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
