Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is often one of the most challenging elements of entering university, and if you are a future student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my moving-in day, several days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day in my room, feeling too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the strongest friendships I’ve experienced at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with light conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking that first plunge at the year’s beginning is crucial. If you’re not prepared or at ease, that’s perfectly fine! There will be numerous ice-breaker occasions and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if there’s one thing you can be, just be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the program and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was the demanding workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can take a toll on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate by comparison. A few things aided me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that others are also puzzled. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students face difficulties. They show compassion towards us and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our worries. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to leverage the assistance provided. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased through the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
