By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about my future as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Diving into the unknown was far from what my formerly shy self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
A significant and early obstacle was forging friendships. This is frequently a primary concern for newcomers to university. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, I spent the entire time in my room, too daunted to mingle with new people. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships here at university. I discovered a second family at Imperial, merely through engaging in casual conversations with others in comparable situations. I realized that taking initiative at the year’s start is advantageous. If you’re feeling unprepared, don’t stress—there are numerous ice-breaker events designed to assist you in connecting with others. Just be yourself, as the university is filled with diverse individuals, and you’re likely to encounter those with similar interests.
Another hurdle was the academic workload and the complexity of content. There was a marked escalation from A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first to the second term. This setting can test your self-confidence, particularly when comparing yourself to peers. Keep in mind, everyone is navigating the same waters. If you’re struggling with something, chances are others are too. Seeking assistance is vital in the first year. Don’t hesitate to reach out to peers and faculty!
The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want students to thrive and are aware of the challenges encountered. They keep in touch with us throughout the academic year. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had accessed it sooner. I took a leap by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which helped me connect with faculty members—a worthwhile experience. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with the faculty, and it’s among the best decisions you can make for yourself. Utilize the support available; you can never have too much!
This year has enlightened me that apprehensions regarding university are often unfounded and can be alleviated through the support from both faculty and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone and how to find enjoyment despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
