**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been introverted and cautious, stepping into the unfamiliar felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year now, I recognize it as a transformative period—one rich in development, challenges, and abundant happiness. So, what have the past twelve months revealed to me, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of commencing university was the prospect of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s probably one of your biggest concerns as well. On my very first day in student housing, a few days prior to the official start of classes, I confined myself to my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly assert that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced.
At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—individuals who share my experiences and provide support. It initiated with casual conversations and bonding with others who felt just as apprehensive as I did. The most significant lesson I garnered was to take that daring step early on. If you’re not immediately prepared or comfortable, don’t fret—there will be countless ice-breaker events and chances to connect with new people. Most crucially, just be your true self. With the diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter those who connect with you.
### Addressing the Academic Struggles
Adapting to the demands and academic standards was another considerable challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was quite stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more substantial. It’s easy to feel swamped or second-guess your skills when observing others study and thrive.
What aided me in navigating this was the realization that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re finding it hard to grasp a topic, there’s a good chance others are too. The vital takeaway is to seek assistance—whether it’s from peers or faculty. This may well be the most essential skill to cultivate during your first year.
### Encouragement from the Materials Department
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Department at Imperial is exceptional. The instructors and tutors truly desire your success and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They’re accessible, understanding, and uphold transparent communication throughout the academic year.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the available pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had begun sooner. One proactive step I took early on was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which proved to be enormously advantageous. There are many avenues through which to interact with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Make the most of the assistance available—you can never have an excess of support!
### Acquired Insights
This year has revealed to me that the apprehension I experienced—both before starting university and during my initial term—was mostly unwarranted. With ample support from faculty and fellow students, those feelings can indeed be navigated and conquered. I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to balance exam and deadline-related stress with enjoyable moments of leisure.
In retrospect, I recognize a year marked by growth, resilience, and connection. If you’re preparing to embark on your own university adventure, remember that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious—but also understand that you’ll find your balance and flourish in ways you never thought possible.
