Looking back ten months to October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about the future as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not a scenario my previously reserved self was used to. As I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is often a significant worry for newcomers to university. On my initial day in my residence, just before the academic term commenced, I spent the whole day alone in my room, feeling too intimidated to engage with new individuals. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve made some incredible friends here, creating a second family at Imperial. It all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. I discovered that taking a chance at the outset of the year is essential. If you’re not ready, that’s perfectly fine! There are numerous ice-breaker events designed to assist you in connecting with others. Being true to yourself is paramount, as you’ll encounter like-minded individuals among the varied student community.

Another significant challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a distinct increase from A-levels, and an even more pronounced one from the first to the second term. This can impact your confidence, especially when you compare yourself to your peers. Keep in mind, everyone is in a similar situation. If you’re struggling with something, others likely are too, so don’t hesitate to seek help. This is possibly the most vital lesson from the first year. Reach out for support from classmates and faculty!

The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize the challenges students encounter. They maintain open communication throughout the year to tackle any issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the academic year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to connect with the staff, a worthwhile experience. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and this is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself. Make the most of the available support; there’s no such thing as too much!

This year has illustrated to me that feelings of anxiety regarding university are often unwarranted and can be eased through the support accessible from staff and fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
