The old me used to shop for clothes without a list. That’s how I ended up with eight identical cream sweaters and jeans all in the same shade of blue! If you are like me, you might find yourself gravitating toward the same items year after year. That’s perfectly okay if you’re content with those particular pieces, but if you’re looking to mix up your style a bit this fall, this post is for you.

To prevent myself from adding unnecessary bulk to my closet this fall, I put together a list of specific pieces I’m on the hunt for to help round out the items I already have in my wardrobe.

01

Statement Cardigans

I’m imagining wearing a statement cardigan atop my nap dress to give it new life for fall! I also like a cardigan paired with long Bermuda shorts with a pair of loafers and some sheer socks.

Patchwork Jeans

Gen Z made a compelling argument for ditching skinny jeans, and while I have one or two pairs in my closet, the world of jeans suddenly became a lot more exciting once I expanded my horizons beyond only vintage Levi’s and mom jeans. Lately, I’ve been particularly interested in patched jeans or ones with embellishments, styled the same way I often pair my Levi’s. I like my baggy pair of patchwork jeans (I own the ones above!) with a long white shirt and clog sandals.

Vests

I picked up my first vintage vest at the end of this past winter and was unsure if it was a look that was going to feel “right” on me. The fit was off on the vintage one, but I know once I have one that is a bit roomier to wear sleeveless or layered over long-sleeve tees, button-downs, or turtlenecks, it will for sure be a staple.

Midi Skirts

Midi skirts take outfits that you would usually wear with either a short skirt or jeans and make them feel a bit more mature and sophisticated. I love the shape this style brings to fall clothing, especially because they look great with so many kinds of footwear—knee-high boots, heels, or flats.

Structured, Cropped Cardigan Jackets

I have saved photos of outfits with the perfect light structured jacket for years now and it seems like there are finally similar styles widely available! I would wear a jacket like this with a white turtleneck, mom jeans, socks, and Birkenstock slides.

Knee-High Boots

I love the idea of wearing these boots under long flowy skirts and maxi dresses!

Something embroidered

I’m definitely looking to add some personality to my outfits through embroidery! I’ve been seeing it on everything lately, from jackets and hats to cardigans and maxi dresses.

Thick and/or Nubby Sweaters

I have a vast collection of sweaters and have noticed that when it comes to making a sweater purchase, quality reins supreme over time. If it’s in your budget, buying a Babaà sweater is akin to purchasing a forever bag, especially when you care for it properly. I like to wear them with so many different styles—with a collared skirt underneath, over a maxi dress with boots, or with wide-leg jeans and Dr. Martens. I’ve also been loving nubby sweaters with bobbles on them lately, like the one below!
