Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey filled with personal development, obstacles, and an abundance of enjoyment! So, what insights has this year provided, and what is my current status?

One of the primary and most intimidating challenges was building friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it may be one of your main worries. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before the term commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room because I felt too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here now, I can assertively state that I have formed some of the closest friendships I have ever enjoyed, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also learned that if you can embody one trait, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse group of individuals in the program and university, you are likely to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being tossed into such a demanding environment can sometimes challenge your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several strategies aided me through that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone shares the same experience. If you find something puzzling, I can almost assure you that there are others who feel the same way. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from both your peers and the staff!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to excel and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy towards students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I made one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to build relationships with staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the support you are provided. You can never have an excess of help!

All in all, this year has demonstrated that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated by the various support systems available through staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to balance enjoyment with the pressures of exams and deadlines.
