Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Back in October 2022, ten months ago, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was preparing to start my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unfamiliar was a challenge for my once-timid and reserved nature. Looking back on the past academic year, I see a path of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of joy! But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This certainly ranks among the more daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my housing, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Sitting here now, I can assuredly state that I’ve made some of the best friends I could have hoped for at this university and in this program. I’ve cultivated a second family at Imperial, and it all began with engaging in light conversation with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not feeling fully prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breaking and events designed to help you connect with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, let it be your true self. With the diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you will certainly find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge I had to navigate was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and to some extent, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can often challenge your confidence; you might witness others studying and feel inadequate in comparison. Several things aided me through that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares your experience. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can nearly guarantee that there are several others who are also confused. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out for help from fellow students and faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and understand that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I certainly took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is an incredibly valuable experience. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for your benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to seize the help being offered to you. There’s no such thing as too much support!

Overall, this year has enlightened me to the reality that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are usually unfounded and can be alleviated through the various support systems available from faculty and fellow students. It has made me realize that I am never alone, and it has taught me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
