Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back now, I can recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current standing?
A significant and daunting hurdle was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more challenging aspects of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it might be one of your primary worries. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day concealing myself in my room, feeling too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, though, I can proudly affirm that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, initiated by engaging in light conversation with those in similar situations. So, what have I gleaned? I realized that taking a courageous step at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re feeling unsure or anxious, don’t fret! There will be countless opportunities for ice-breaking and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also recognized that if you can embody anything, be authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals in the course and university, you are bound to meet people who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the workload and complexity of the material. There was indeed a noticeable leap from A-levels, and in some ways, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere isn’t always a confidence booster; you might witness others engaged in study and feel inadequate. A few factors helped me navigate that sentiment, one being the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly assure you that others are also struggling with the same concepts. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to absorb in the first year. Reach out for help from your fellow students and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and understand that students face difficulties. They relate to our struggles and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I referred to taking risks earlier – I did take one at the outset of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to become familiar with the staff, and it’s undeniably one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to capitalize on the assistance available to you. You can never receive too much!
In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both in anticipation of and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated through the various support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone, and how to find enjoyment amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
