Ten months prior, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a journey rich in personal growth, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most daunting hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect is frequently one of the most intimidating parts of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day isolated in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet new people. Today, however, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what lesson did I learn? I realized that taking a risk at the outset of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking opportunities and events to aid in connecting with others. I also came to understand that if there’s one thing to be, be authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter others like yourself.
Another obstacle was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in certain ways, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere isn’t always conducive to your self-confidence; observing others study may leave you feeling insufficient. Several factors assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, it’s almost a certainty that others are too. Thus, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to absorb in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from both your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff in Materials are incredible. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students face challenges. They show empathy and maintain consistent communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had accessed it sooner. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to seize the assistance available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated by the numerous support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
