Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about the future as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not a familiar experience for my previously reserved self. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This can often be one of the scariest aspects of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just before the term commenced, I spent the entire day locked in my room, too daunted to step out and meet new people. Now, I can say with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships during my time at university and within my program. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, starting with casual conversations with others in similar predicaments. So, what has been my takeaway? It’s important to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There are plenty of ice-breaker events designed to help you bond with others. Additionally, if there’s one thing to prioritize, it’s being yourself. With such a diverse group of people across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who share your interests.
Another significant challenge was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a notable increase from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can challenge your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What helped me was realizing that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something doesn’t make sense, I can nearly guarantee that others are confused as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to peers and faculty for support!
This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges students endure. They empathize and keep ongoing communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referenced taking leaps before – I made one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with faculty members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the greatest things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway is to capitalize on the available support. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated with the support accessible from staff and peers. I’ve discovered that I’m never alone and how to have a good time despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
