Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved personality was equipped for. Looking back now, I recognize this year as one abundant with personal development, hurdles, and countless enjoyable moments! However, what have I discovered this year, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was establishing friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re a potential student reading this, it may be among your chief worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester commencing, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to others. Sitting here today, I can assertively say that I have formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in analogous situations. So, what did I discern? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is invariably advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fear not! There will be ample opportunities for icebreakers and activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to meet like-minded peers.
Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a significant increase from A-levels, and in many ways, an even more considerable jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can pose a challenge to your self-confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re puzzled by something, I can almost assure you that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the staff!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I took a leap at the start of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to become acquainted with the staff members, which is incredibly worthwhile. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this university experience is to utilize the assistance available to you. You can never have too much help!
Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the diverse support resources offered by staff and fellow students. It’s taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
