By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Back in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and unsure about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back, I recognize that this academic year has been one of personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current state?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This undoubtedly ranks among the more daunting elements of embarking on university life, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it could very well be on your mind. On the day I moved into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, overwhelmed by the thought of stepping out and introducing myself to others. However, sitting here now, I can assertively say that I have made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, both at this university and within this program. I’ve established a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was striking up conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that it’s always beneficial to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely ready or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to help you connect with others. I also learned that if you can be anything, just be yourself. With such a diverse range of people across the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be tough on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate in comparison. A few elements helped me navigate that sentiment, one being the realization that everyone is experiencing the same challenges as you. If something isn’t clear, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others who also share that confusion. Therefore, seek assistance. This could quite possibly be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Request help from your classmates and the staff!

This leads me to my next point. The staff within Materials are incredible. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards students and keep in touch with us consistently throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had started earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one at the year’s beginning by becoming a well-being representative. This role allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s certainly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to fully leverage the assistance being offered to you. You can never have excess support!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both leading up to and within university, are nearly always baseless and can be eased with the plethora of support available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to have fun even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
