Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt an overwhelming mix of anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my former timid and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back, I can see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a significant amount of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?
Among the foremost and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of entering university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my very first day of moving into my residence, a few days before classes kicked off, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, far too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Yet, as I sit here now, I can affirm that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known, both at this institution and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family right here at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with fellow newcomers. So, what insights did I gain? I realized it’s crucial to take a bold step at the beginning of the year. If you feel a bit unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaking chances and events designed to help you mingle with others. I also learned that if you can embody one trait, it should be authenticity. With so many diverse individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a shift from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always beneficial for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel like you don’t measure up. A few strategies helped me navigate through that feeling, one of which was recognizing that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, I can nearly assure you that there are others who share your confusion. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This could be the most significant lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek guidance from your classmates and the faculty!
This segues into my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the difficulties students encounter. They show compassion towards students and maintain ongoing dialogue with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking bold steps – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role provided me the opportunity to connect with faculty members, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with the staff, and it’s unquestionably one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to fully utilize the assistance that’s available to you. There’s no such thing as too much support!
In summary, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated through the various support resources provided by both staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never truly alone, and it has taught me how to find enjoyment even amidst challenges such as exams and deadlines.
