Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

In October 2022, nearly a year ago, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I prepared to embark on my journey as a first-year student in Materials Science and Engineering. Stepping into the unknown was a departure from the reserved person I had been. Now, looking back, I recognize a year rich in self-discovery, challenges, and enjoyment. So, what lessons have I taken away, and where do I find myself today?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This is frequently a primary concern for newcomers to university life. On the day I moved into my accommodation, I isolated myself in my room, feeling too daunted to interact with others. Today, I can proudly state that I’ve built some of the most meaningful friendships here at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all initiated by casual conversations with peers in similar circumstances. I realized the significance of taking bold steps at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, there’s no need to fret! Numerous ice-breaker activities are available to help facilitate connections with fellow students. Moreover, be authentic; with such a diverse group of people, you’re bound to encounter those who resonate with you.

The workload and complexity of the material posed another challenge. The shift from A-levels was noticeably steep, and the leap from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. This academic atmosphere can shake your confidence, leading you to feel inadequate in comparison to your peers. Keep in mind that everyone shares this experience. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, chances are others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is pivotal during your first year. Reach out to both your classmates and faculty!

The faculty in Materials Science are incredible. They genuinely wish for students to thrive and are aware of the challenges students may encounter. They engage with us regarding our issues. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I wish I had availed myself of it sooner. I took a chance by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to forge connections with faculty members—an invaluable experience. There are many opportunities to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for your own benefit. Take full advantage of the resources available; there is no such thing as too much help!

This year has revealed that the apprehension surrounding university is often unfounded and can be dispelled with the support provided by both staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and has taught me to find joy even amidst the pressures of exams and impending deadlines.
