Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my typically shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be one of your greatest concerns. On my initial day of moving into my housing, a few days prior to the semester commencing, I spent the whole day hiding in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, reflecting on my experience today, I can affirm that I have forged some of the most incredible friendships at this university and within this program. I discovered a second family here at Imperial, starting with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take the plunge at the start of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker occasions and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was the volume of work and complexity of content. There was undoubtedly a noticeable shift from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel unqualified. A few things supported me through that sentiment, one being the reassurance that everyone is in a similar position. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that others are as well. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My principal takeaway regarding this element of university life is to seize the support available to you. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated by the various support resources offered by faculty and fellow students. It has enlightened me that I am never alone and has taught me how to find enjoyment despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
