Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was prepared for. Looking back on the previous academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, just days before the term commenced, I spent the whole day retreating in my room, too daunted to emerge and introduce myself. Now, I can say with confidence that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I take away from this? I realized that making an effort at the onset of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be an abundance of ice-breaking chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that being true to yourself is essential. With numerous diverse individuals in the course and university, you are certain to find like-minded peers.

Another obstacle was the amount of work and the difficulty of the content. There was indeed a significant increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What supported me through this was the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you others don’t either. So, seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson to learn in the first year. Ask for guidance from fellow students and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They relate to our experiences and keep in regular contact throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances previously – I took one at the year’s beginning by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to utilize the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased by the various support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy even amid stressors such as exams and deadlines.
