Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a whole lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking elements of beginning university, and if you are an incoming student reading this, it might be among your primary worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days before the term started, I spent the whole day retreating in my room, too daunted to step out and greet others. Nevertheless, sitting here now, I can say with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with peers in similar circumstances. So, what did I glean? I learned that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, it’s to be yourself. With a multitude of diverse individuals across the program and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and difficulty of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in many respects, a more substantial leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be taxing on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is in a similar situation. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly guarantee that others don’t either. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Seek help from your fellow students and the faculty!

This brings me to my following point. The staff in Materials are incredible. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students face challenges. They sympathize with students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I made one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are plenty of avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undeniably one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the support that is extended to you. You can never have too much!

All in all, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both preceding and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the myriad of support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone, and it has revealed to me how to enjoy myself despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
