Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was familiar with. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize it as a time of personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current state?

One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was building friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are reading this as an incoming student, it may be a significant concern for you. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just a few days before classes started, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too apprehensive to step out and meet others. Sitting here today, I can confidently affirm that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with some casual conversations with people experiencing similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I realized that it’s always advantageous to take initiative at the start of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous opportunities and events to help you engage with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be genuine. With so many diverse individuals in the course and the university, you’re sure to find companions who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can sometimes be taxing on your self-assurance; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar experiences. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others are in the same position. Thus, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your freshman year. Reach out for support from fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success and understand that students face challenges. They show compassion towards students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t really engage with the pastoral support until near the year’s end, but I wish I had accessed it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to meet staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to capitalize on the support that is available to you. You can never have too much!

On a broader scale, this year has enlightened me that feelings of apprehension, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be eased with the multitude of support resources accessible from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has shown me how to find joy alongside the pressures of exams and deadlines.
