Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Jumping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be your largest worry. On my initial day moving into housing, a few days ahead of the semester starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too frightened to step outside and introduce myself. Today, however, I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar positions. So, what did I glean? I learned that taking a plunge at the start of the year is vital. If you’re not ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the difficulty of the material. There was a significant increase from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can be hard on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. What helped me was the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same struggles. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you others don’t as well. So, seek out help. This is arguably the most crucial lesson in the first year. Reach out for assistance from fellow students and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They want you to thrive and fully comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and maintain open lines of communication about our concerns. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one by becoming a wellness representative for the year. This position enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My main takeaway is to utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated with the support offered by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and has taught me how to have fun despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
