Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with nerves, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Diving into this new experience was a far cry from my previously shy and reserved nature. Reflecting back, I recognize an entire academic year brimming with personal growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! So, what valuable lessons have I gleaned from this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This can truly feel like one of the more intimidating elements of starting university, and if you’re a potential student reading this, it may be one of your primary concerns. On my moving day into my accommodation, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day hidden away in my room due to my apprehension about stepping out and greeting others. However, sitting here today, I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve found a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with engaging in small talk with others in similar circumstances. So, what’s the takeaway? I learned that taking a leap early in the year is crucial. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to aid your interaction with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one trait, let it be authenticity. With the diverse range of individuals in the program and the university, you’re sure to connect with those who resonate with your vibe.

Another challenge I had to overcome was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was certainly significant, and in some respects, the leap from the first term to the second was even larger. Being thrust into such an environment can certainly shake your confidence; witnessing others studying might lead you to doubt your capabilities. A few key insights assisted me through that phase, one being the realization that everyone shares the same struggles. If you find yourself confused by a concept, I can almost assure you that there are several others feeling the same way. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may very well be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty for assistance!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in the Materials department are phenomenal. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They understand our challenges and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our experiences. I didn’t really take advantage of the support systems until the end of the year, but I wish I had engaged with them sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the outset of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is an incredibly beneficial endeavor. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this particular aspect of university life is to seize the support being offered to you. You can never have too much!

Overall, this year has illuminated for me that feelings of nervousness, both in the run-up to and during university, are usually unfounded and can be alleviated through the various support options provided by faculty and fellow students. I’ve learned that I am never isolated in my experiences, and I’ve discovered how to balance enjoyment with the pressures of exams and deadlines.
