Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Entering the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I can see a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This often stands as one of the most nerve-wracking elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might weigh heavily on your mind. On my inaugural day settling into my accommodation, just days prior to the term’s start, I spent the whole day in my room, far too daunted to venture out and socialize. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships ever, both at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, starting with light conversations with others in similar positions. So, what was my takeaway? I learned that making the first move at the start of the year is always most beneficial. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities to aid in connecting with others. I also discovered that authenticity is crucial. Among such a diverse array of individuals within the course and university, you’re certain to encounter like-minded people.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a clear escalation from A-levels, and an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What assisted me was the reminder that everyone is navigating similar waters. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can nearly guarantee that others are in the same situation. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson of the first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges that students encounter. They show understanding and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so sooner. I referred to taking leaps earlier – I made one by becoming a year wellbeing representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to engage with faculty, and it’s among the best choices you can make for yourself! My chief insight is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that apprehensive feelings regarding university are frequently unfounded and can be lessened through the support from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find joy amid stresses like exams and deadlines.
