**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what the future held. I was on the cusp of beginning my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a naturally shy and reserved individual, venturing into the unknown was well outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on the previous academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges faced, and an abundance of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student perusing this, it’s probable that it’s a concern for you as well. On my very first day at student accommodations, just days ahead of the term starting, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had. These connections have transformed into my second family at Imperial.
What changed? I made the decision to engage in small talk with peers who were experiencing similar feelings. I discovered that beginning the year with an eagerness to step beyond your comfort zone is essential. If you’re not prepared initially, don’t fret—there are plenty of icebreaker events and avenues to meet others. Above all, I learned that being authentic is the most effective strategy. With Imperial’s diverse community, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the increased volume of work and the heightened complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. Maintaining confidence proved difficult at times, particularly when witnessing others studying and feeling inadequate in comparison.
What aided my journey was the recognition that I wasn’t alone. Everyone was dealing with similar hurdles, and if I struggled to grasp a concept, it was likely that others did too. The key takeaway was the importance of seeking help. Whether from peers or teaching staff, pursuing assistance is vital in your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. They foster open communication throughout the year and are always available to provide assistance.
I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support options until late in the year, and I wish I had engaged sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish rapport with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and doing so can vastly enhance your university journey. My most significant lesson? Utilize the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
This year has illuminated for me that the anxiety I felt prior to starting university, as well as during my initial weeks, was largely unwarranted. There is an abundance of support available, both from staff and fellow students, to assist you in navigating the challenges. I’ve come to understand that I am never truly alone and that it’s feasible to enjoy university life amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
Looking back, I feel a sense of pride in how far I’ve progressed. The path hasn’t been without its difficulties, but it has been a journey of growth, learning, and connection. To anyone on the brink of starting their own university experience: take the plunge, embrace the support that surrounds you, and remember to relish the adventure.
