### My Nine-Month Experience in London: Insights Gained

*By Harsh Gupta, MSc. Advanced Materials Science and Engineering*

Nine months prior, I began my adventure of residing in London. Although this may not sound like an extended period, it has provided me with significant understanding of this dynamic city. London serves not only as a center for a variety of housing options but also as a crossroads of cultures and communities. For students, the city presents an abundance of choices, ranging from student accommodations to private rentals, such as ensuite rooms, shared living spaces, studio flats, and house shares.

For local students, scheduling an apartment viewing is a simple process, while international students can utilize resources like Rightmove, Zoopla, or SpareRoom. These platforms enable them to browse potential housing options online, verify amenities, and evaluate the closeness to public transport links.

### Discovering My Perfect Living Arrangement

As I initiated my search, I was eager to secure a room in Central London to remain near key attractions, social venues, and my university, Imperial College. The city is organized into six concentric zones, with zones one and two being the most central part. The extensive public transportation network—including the Underground (tube), buses, and trains—facilitates easy travel between zones.

To cut down on travel expenses, I decided to walk shorter distances instead of utilizing public transport. Travel between zones could amount to up to £5.25 per day, but discounted Oyster card options have made commuting more economical for students. For longer journeys, the London Overground and National Rail services reach beyond the Underground, although fares differ based on distance and the pricing of the train operator.

Residing in Central London has its advantages, yet it also entails higher living expenses. To keep costs in check, I shared a room with a friend, which considerably decreased our rent. I opted for intercollegiate student accommodations to connect with peers from varied backgrounds and similar age groups—an experience that private housing might not have facilitated.

### The Value of Location

For me, proximity to grocery stores was a major concern. Popular supermarket chains such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Co-op are plentiful, while more affordable options include Aldi, Lidl, and Iceland. Being near essential shops and pharmacies proved crucial, particularly during exam times when every second counts.

### Selecting the Right Area

Choosing an area in London can be daunting due to the city’s vast cultural diversity. Many international students are drawn to neighborhoods that echo the familiarity of their home nations. For example:

– **Southall (West London):** Renowned for its sizable South Asian community, Southall features Indian eateries, grocery shops, and traditional clothing stores.
– **Brixton (South London):** Famous for its Afro-Caribbean community and vibrant music culture.
– **Chinatown (Central London):** Situated in the West End, Chinatown is a lively center of Chinese restaurants, shops, and cultural happenings.

These neighborhoods illustrate just a fraction of London’s multicultural landscape.

### Embracing Life in London

Ultimately, the ideal living situation in London is contingent upon your individual preferences and interests. Whether you’re navigating the city’s varied accommodation selections or delving into its cultural districts, London presents a distinctive mix of convenience, excitement, and opportunities.

My time here has been a fulfilling journey, and I am eager to continue exploring this extraordinary city.
