**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in a mix of anxious excitement, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my experience as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone naturally shy and introverted, taking the plunge into this new chapter felt daunting. Now, as I look back on the last academic year, I recognize a path of development, obstacles, and numerous joyful moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

Among the most daunting elements of commencing university was the challenge of forming friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my initial day in student housing, just prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others.

Fast forward to now, I am proud to say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both in my program and throughout the university—have become my extended family. All it took was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with those who were experiencing similar feelings.

What did I discover? Taking that first step is always a worthwhile endeavor. If you’re not instantly comfortable, don’t worry—there will be numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to meet new people. Most importantly, simply be true to yourself. With such a diverse population at Imperial, you’re sure to meet others who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Adjusting to the academic expectations of university was another major hurdle. The leap from A-levels to university-level studies was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and question your capabilities, especially when you observe others studying and wonder if you’re doing enough.

What assisted me in navigating this was the realization that we’re all in the same situation. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, likely others are too. The essential thing is to request help—whether from classmates or instructors. This is perhaps the most crucial lesson I gleaned during my first year: don’t shy away from seeking aid.

### Assistance from Faculty and Pastoral Support

Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials department are remarkable. They truly care about students’ success and understand the hurdles we face. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our concerns and offering advice.

While I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Becoming a year well-being representative was one of the initiatives I embraced early on, and it proved to be an excellent choice. It allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which became invaluable. There are many opportunities to engage with faculty, and doing so can profoundly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Utilize the resources and support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned a great deal. Those anxious feelings I experienced before entering university and even throughout the year were frequently unfounded. With a wealth of support from both faculty and fellow students, I came to understand that I was never genuinely alone.

Above all, I learned to manage the pressures of exams and deadlines while also making room for moments of fun and joy. University is a period for personal development, and while it presents its challenges, it’s also brimming with opportunities to excel and forge enduring memories.
