**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and doubt regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who has always been timid and reserved, stepping into the unknown was definitely outside my comfort zone. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of happiness, I can’t help but ponder the insights I’ve gained and how much I’ve evolved.

### Conquering the Fear of Building Friendships

One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered at the outset of university was the task of making new friends. If you’re an incoming student, this might also be one of your chief concerns. On the first day of my time in student housing, mere days before classes officially commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too frightened to step out and introduce myself to others.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known. The individuals I’ve encountered here at Imperial have turned into my second family. It all initiated with small, simple conversations with others who were equally anxious as I was.

So, what did I discover? Taking that first bold step at the start of the year pays off. If you’re not prepared right away, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the new workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially when it appears others are handling everything with ease.

What aided me in pushing through was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re finding it difficult to grasp something, it’s likely others are too. The crucial lesson is to seek assistance—be it from your classmates or the academic staff. This skill is undoubtedly one of the most essential to cultivate in your first year.

### Aid from the Materials Department

Speaking of staff, the support network in the Materials department is exceptional. The instructors and staff truly want you to thrive and are well aware of the obstacles students face. They’re approachable, understanding, and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year to tackle any concerns.

While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had sought it earlier. Becoming a year well-being representative was one of my best choices. It gave me the opportunity to develop bonds with staff members, which turned out to be priceless. Whether through formal roles or informal encounters, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the best steps you can take for your own benefit. My biggest lesson? Make the most of the support offered to you—you can never have too much help!

### Insights Gained

In retrospect, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was largely baseless. With the abundant support from staff and fellow students, I was never sincerely alone. I’ve discovered how to manage stress from exams and deadlines while also finding time for joy and enjoyment.

Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a path of self-discovery, development, and connection. For anyone preparing to embark on their own university adventure, my advice is straightforward: welcome the challenges, take bold steps, and don’t hesitate to rely on the support systems surrounding you.
