Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into uncharted territory was not something my formerly timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you happen to be an incoming student, it might be a significant worry. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, just days before the semester started, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to go out and meet others. Today, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships during my time at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is beneficial. If you aren’t prepared or at ease, that’s perfectly fine! Numerous ice-breaker activities will be available to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that being authentic is essential. With such a wide array of people throughout the course and university, you are bound to encounter those who you connect with.
Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a distinct increase from A-levels, and an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being in this kind of environment can test your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was recalling that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, others probably don’t grasp it either. Therefore, seek help. This might be the most vital lesson to internalize in your first year. Don’t hesitate to reach out to peers and faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and maintain steady communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year was nearly over, but I wish I had engaged with it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the assistance provided. You can never have an excess of support!
In summary, this year has shown me that anxieties, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated with the support available from faculty and fellow students. I have learned that I am never alone, and I have figured out how to have fun despite the pressures like exams and deadlines.
