In October 2022, ten months ago, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was accustomed to. Now, looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was making acquaintances. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to classes commencing, I spent the entire day isolated in my room, too daunted to step outside and introduce myself. However, today I can confidently assert that I’ve forged some of the finest bonds here at this university within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I discovered? I learned that taking the initiative at the start of the year is essential. If you’re not fully prepared or comfortable, that’s perfectly fine! There will be numerous ice-breaker events available to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that being authentic is vital. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another challenge was coping with the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly an increase in difficulty from A-levels, and in many respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can shake your self-assurance; witnessing others study may lead to feelings of insufficiency. Several strategies assisted me during this period, one being the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, I can almost assure you that others are in the same predicament. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial skill to cultivate in the first year. Seek guidance from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They relate to our experiences and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully benefit from the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I referenced taking initiatives earlier – I indeed took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to become acquainted with the faculty, which is immensely helpful. There are numerous methods to connect with the staff, and it is among the best things you can do for yourself! My key lesson is to fully utilize the support available. You can never have an excess of it!
In conclusion, this year has illustrated to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be mitigated with the various support resources accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has revealed that I am never alone and taught me how to find enjoyment amid the pressures of exams and deadlines.
