Around ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my once timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undeniably one of the more frightening elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as someone considering enrollment, it may be one of your top concerns. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room because I was too fearful to venture out and introduce myself to others. Sitting here now, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve built a second family here at Imperial, all initiated by engaging in casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this experience? I found that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker events and activities designed to facilitate interactions with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one trait, let it be authenticity. With such a diverse range of individuals throughout the program and university, you’re sure to meet people who resonate with you.

Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a noticeable leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be daunting for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If something doesn’t make sense to you, I can almost assure you that there are others grappling with the same confusion. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty for assistance!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students experience difficulties. They show compassion towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the academic year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had begun earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps—I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s unquestionably one of the best things you can do for your personal growth! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to capitalize on the assistance that’s available to you. You can never have too much support!

In general terms, this year has taught me that feelings of apprehension, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unwarranted and can be mitigated through the numerous support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has shown me how to find joy amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
