**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I experienced a whirlwind of nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been more timid and introspective, stepping into the unknown was quite daunting. Now, as I reflect on a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment, I can appreciate just how much I’ve absorbed and the progress I’ve made.
### Confronting the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting obstacles I confronted at the onset of university was forging friendships. For many incoming students, this tends to be one of the primary worries, and I was certainly no different. On my first day in the student residence, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve cultivated some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve encountered here—within my program and across the campus—have truly become like a second family. It all commenced with small gestures, like engaging in light-hearted conversations with fellow newcomers who were just as uncertain as I was.
What did I take away from this experience? Taking that first step is always beneficial. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be myriad icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most crucially, I discovered the importance of being myself. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened difficulty of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was distinct, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more formidable. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and wonder if you’re measuring up.
What supported me was understanding that everyone shares this experience. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, there’s a good chance others are as well. The essential lesson here is to reach out for assistance—whether it’s from classmates or teaching staff. This was, perhaps, the most valuable insight I gained during my first year: don’t shy away from seeking help.
### The Importance of Supportive Staff
On the topic of support, the staff within the Materials department have been nothing short of exceptional. They genuinely care about our success and empathize with the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our concerns and offering guidance.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the available pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not utilizing it sooner. Early on, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to establish rapport with staff members. This proved to be a priceless experience. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My primary takeaway here is to leverage the help and resources at your disposal—there’s no such thing as too much support.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve recognized that the anxiety I experienced leading up to university—and even throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the extensive range of support options from both staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. This year has taught me how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines alongside moments of happiness and enjoyment.
To anyone gearing up for university, my message is straightforward: take that leap, be authentic, and don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance. The challenges may seem formidable at first, but they are all components of a journey that will foster growth in ways you never anticipated.
