Authored by Dawson La, Master of Engineering in Materials Science and Engineering

Around ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and restrained self was used to. Looking back now, I perceive a year abundant with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This frequently represents one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, merely days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, I can now assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, both at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with peers in comparable situations. So, what did I realize? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re feeling unsure or uneasy, fear not! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a wide array of individuals in the course and across the university, you’re certain to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a transition from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always simple for one’s self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. What assisted me in overcoming that sensation was the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you’re struggling with something, I can virtually guarantee others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most critical lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They relate to our experiences and keep open lines of communication throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking chances previously – I took one at the year’s commencement by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which I found extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with the faculty, and it truly is one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My principal takeaway from this facet of university is to make the most of the support available. You can never have an excess of help!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated through the various support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never alone, and it’s taught me how to enjoy myself even amid pressures such as exams and deadlines.
