Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Engaging with the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was accustomed to. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights did I gain this year, and where do I find myself now?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most anxiety-inducing facets of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, this might be a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the semester commencing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet people. Today, however, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most amazing friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not fully prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that being true to yourself is the most effective strategy. With a multitude of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to meet those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a significant escalation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an environment can impact your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone finds themselves in a similar position. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you there are others who are equally lost. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter obstacles. They empathize with students and keep in touch with us consistently throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had embraced it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I made one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to build relationships with the staff, which is exceptionally beneficial. There are various avenues to connect with the faculty, and it is certainly one of the most rewarding actions you can undertake for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

All in all, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated with the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated and how to find enjoyment alongside pressures such as exams and deadlines.
