**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new chapter felt daunting. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year that has been life-changing—rich with growth, obstacles, and memorable experiences. So, what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was the challenge of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s likely this concern resonates with you too. On my initial day in student housing, just days before the term started, I spent the entire day retreating to my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like family.
What made the difference? It all commenced with light conversation. I soon realized that everyone else was equally nervous and uncertain. Making that first move to connect with others was crucial. If you’re not prepared to jump in right away, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet people throughout the year. Most importantly, I discovered the value of being genuine. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the intricacy of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s all too common to feel overwhelmed or question your competencies when observing others studying and seemingly thriving.
What aided me in this transition was the awareness that everyone was navigating similar difficulties. If you find yourself struggling to comprehend something, chances are others are experiencing the same. The best course of action is to seek assistance—be it from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most valuable skill you can hone during your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials department have been outstanding. They genuinely desire for students to excel and exhibit empathy towards the challenges we confront. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, responding to our concerns and providing guidance.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until late in the year, I wish I had sought it earlier. Early on, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my year, which enabled me to forge strong relationships with staff members. This proved to be an invaluable experience, and I urge others to find ways to connect with their lecturers and tutors. The support exists—don’t hesitate to utilize it.
### Key Takeaways from My First Year
Reflecting on the past year, I have learned an immense amount. I realized that much of the apprehension I felt before beginning university—and even throughout the year—was frequently without basis. With the abundance of support from both faculty and peers, I was never genuinely alone.
Most importantly, I have discovered how to juggle the demands of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and enjoyment. University encompasses personal development and fun as much as it does academics, and this year’s experiences have affirmed that.
To anyone about to embark on their own journey, rest assured that the challenges you encounter will foster your growth, and the support surrounding you will empower you to flourish. Embrace that leap—you won’t look back with regret.
