In October 2022, ten months ago, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my formerly timid and withdrawn self was used to. Now, looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into residence, a few days prior to the term’s start, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to venture out and engage with others. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others experiencing the same situation. So, what have I gleaned? I realized that taking a gamble at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not quite prepared or at ease, no need to fret! There are numerous ice-breaker activities designed to facilitate connections with others. I also recognized that being genuine is essential. With such a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even greater jump from the first to the second term. Existing in such an environment can challenge your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What assisted me was recalling that everyone shares similar experiences. If you find something confusing, I can nearly assure you that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Look for support from peers and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep us informed about our concerns consistently. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I made one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to become acquainted with faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to utilize the help that is available. You can never have an excess of it!
Ultimately, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and throughout university, are frequently unwarranted and can be eased with the support mechanisms offered by staff and fellow students. It has illuminated the fact that I am never alone and has shown me how to find enjoyment despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
