**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was brimming with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, stepping into the unknown seemed overwhelming. Now, reflecting on a year of academic growth, trials, and abundant enjoyment, I can genuinely appreciate the knowledge I’ve gained and the distance I’ve traveled.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was forming friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, you might resonate with those feelings. On my inaugural day in student housing, I spent the whole time cloistered away in my room, too daunted to emerge and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known.

The pivotal moment arrived when I opted to engage in conversations with others who were feeling similarly. That small yet significant move led to the creation of a second family here at Imperial. My most important takeaway? Take an early plunge into socializing. Even if you’re hesitant or uneasy, there will be plenty of icebreaker activities and chances to connect with fellow students. Above all, remain authentic. In such a diverse setting at Imperial, you’re sure to discover individuals who align with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Adapting to the academic expectations of university posed another significant obstacle. The transition from A-level studies to university-level material was stark, and the leap from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become inundated or question your capabilities when observing others thriving.

What proved helpful was the understanding that everyone experiences similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult, it’s likely that others are as well. The crucial element is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most essential skill you can cultivate during your first year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

A highlight of my experience has been the outstanding support from the Materials Science faculty. They genuinely care about student success and show understanding toward the hurdles we confront. Throughout the year, they fostered open lines of communication and provided unwavering support.

While I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing it sooner. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative felt daunting, but it proved to be a fulfilling experience. It allowed me to build important connections with staff members, which was invaluable. Whether through official roles or casual chats, familiarizing yourself with the staff is one of the best decisions you can make. My suggestion? Fully utilize the support and resources at your disposal—you can never receive too much help!

### Insights Gained

This year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced prior to university, and even throughout the year, was frequently misplaced. With the extensive support from both staff and peers, I was never truly alone. I’ve managed to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and excitement, leading to significant personal growth.

In retrospect, I recognize a year marked by self-exploration, resilience, and community. If you’re about to begin your university journey, know that feeling anxious is completely understandable. Take those leaps, face the challenges, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You will emerge stronger and with treasured memories.
