**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed by anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the journey that awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my first year as a student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, jumping into this new experience felt quite intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time filled with significant personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships

A chief concern while beginning university was the fear of making new friends. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might share that worry. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too anxious to go out and mingle with others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve found some of the best friends I’ve ever had.

These friends have become my second family, and it all commenced with brief conversations with others who were just as uneasy as I was. What I’ve discovered is that taking that initial leap is incredibly worthwhile. If you aren’t prepared immediately, don’t stress—there are ample icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and the university, you’re sure to meet those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Shift

Another primary challenge was adapting to the increased workload and the elevated difficulty of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was evident, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more significant. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your abilities when witnessing others study and apparently thrive.

What aided me in overcoming this was understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you find yourself struggling with certain concepts, it’s highly likely others are too. The crucial step is to ask for assistance—whether it be from fellow students or faculty members. This was perhaps the most vital lesson I learned this year: don’t hesitate to seek help.

### The Encouraging Faculty

On the topic of support, the faculty within the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely want students to achieve their goals and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our concerns and providing valuable guidance.

Although I didn’t fully tap into the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had explored it earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the initiatives I undertook at the year’s outset, and it turned out to be a remarkable choice. It enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are many avenues to get acquainted with the faculty, and I highly recommend seizing these opportunities. The assistance they extend can truly be transformative.

### Insights Gained

As I reflect on the year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I experienced—both when beginning university and throughout the year—was often unfounded. There is a wealth of support available, whether from faculty or fellow students, to help navigate any obstacles. This year has shown me that I’m never truly alone, teaching me how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.

To anyone about to embark on their university adventure: take that leap. Embrace new experiences, seek help when necessary, and trust that you will find your place.
